The Teams
Treaty United
Treaty United began their FAI Cup journey with a penalty shootout victory over Kilbarrack United following a scoreless 120 minutes of football in the second round. Treaty had their chances but struggled to break down Kilbarrack’s low press, while the visitors failed to take the gilt-edged chances they created. Michael Dike proved to be the hero with two saves in the shootout. Treaty entertained local side Pike Rovers in the third round and took no chances on this occasion, fielding a strong team and grabbing the first of their seven goals on 40 seconds.
In terms of form, Treaty have not been firing on all cylinders of late with one draw and two losses in their last three outings. Last week Tommy Barrett’s side snatched a point at the very death at home to Kerry FC as Evan O’Connor’s 101st minute goal cancelled out Sean McGrath’s opener. Treaty deserved a result on the night and the manner that they earned it would suggest that their luck might be turning. Tommy Barrett’s side have struggled in front of goal but scored in all four of their meetings with Wexford this season and have only been kept scoreless in two of their fifteen meetings with James Keddy’s team. Treaty will hope to take advantage of Wexford’s defensive frailties once more on Friday.
Colin Conroy will return from suspension for Friday’s game. Mark Byrne, who hasn’t featured since the beginning of August, may make the bench on Friday while manager Tommy Barrett will be hoping to see the return of Lee J Lynch and Yoyo Mahdy. Lee Devitt and Thomas Considine, who both went off last Friday, remain doubts.
Wexford FC
Wexford have experienced a similar journey to Treaty on their path to this Quarter-Final. They ran out 3-1 winners away to Wayside Celtic in the second round and followed that up with a 3-0 win away to Ballyfermot United.
Wexford are enjoying their best run of form all season with six consecutive wins and no defeat in their last seven. Last week, goals from Ethan Boyle and Aaron Dobbs saw Wexford pick up a 2-1 win away to Cobh Ramblers. That win boosted them up to third in the table, six points clear of the nearest playoff chaser, and they would love to add a cup run to their 2024 exploits.
Wexford have no problems when it comes to scoring goals with 58 goals across 32 league and FAI Cup games. Aaron Dobbs, Thomas Oluwa and Mikie Rowe have been sensational up top and have scored 30 of those goals, which will give Tommy Barrett and his rearguard plenty to think about. They do have problems in terms of defending though with 47 goals conceded and just four clean sheets across the same number of games. Wexford will create plenty of chances but will offer opportunities for Treaty which should make for an exciting game.
Previous Encounters
This is the sixteenth meeting between the sides with there being an equal number of wins for each side and draws. Wexford won two of the four league meetings between the sides this season (one at home and one away), while a Treaty win and a 2-2 were the outcome of the other two meetings.
The sides met on August 23rd at the Markets Field where Treaty United took a 1-0 lead into the break, but Wexford struck three times in 19 minutes to take all three points. The most memorable meeting between the sides occurred on the opening day of the 2022 season where Treaty thumped Wexford 5-1 at a windswept Ferrycarrig Park.
