The Teams
Treaty United
Sitting in ninth place on fourteen points, Treaty United lost out by the odd goal in three in last week’s FAI Cup Quarter-Final with reigning champions and current league leaders Athlone Town. The visitors took the lead through a Brenda Tabe header in the first half, but Treaty struck back through a Katie Lawlee-assisted own-goal just after the break. Athlone got the winning goal inside the final twenty minutes when Kellie Brennan’s free kick from range went straight in.
Manager Dominic Foley will be disappointed with the manner of the goals conceded and the lack of precision in front of the opposition’s goal, but will see this Saturday’s game as a big opportunity to bounce back and push his side up the table.
Grace Gleeson, who attended WU19 assessments mid-week alongside Katie Lawlee, returned to the bench last week and is working her way back to full fitness. Laura O’Neill continues her return to fitness following an ankle injury in pre-season.
Cork City FC
Sitting in seventh place on seventeen points, Cork City secured an FAI Cup Semi-Final away to Shelbourne after defeating Bohemians after extra-time last week. An uneventful 90 minutes was followed by an exciting thirty minutes of extra-time which saw City take the lead through an Orlaith O’Mahony screamer before Katie Malone levelled for Bohs. There was to be another twist in the tale as Eidson Barrett grabbed the winner at the death.
Cork City come into Saturday’s game with just one defeat in their last six, but they have shown weakness at the back having kept just two clean sheets in those game – one of which came in a 9-0 win over Douglas Hall. They have the joint-second most goals conceded in the Women’s Premier Division this season and will need to tighten up at the back against a Treaty forward line that has looked dangerous despite misfiring on occasion.
Previous Encounters
This fixture has treated Cork City well over the years, but Treaty were sound 3-0 winners when the sides met at Turner’s Cross in May in front of the TV cameras. The best Treaty have mustered at the Markets Field when City have come to town is a 1-1 draw in March of last year where Kiara Kilbey’s strike cancelled out Laura Shine’s opener to ensure a share of the spoils.
