Blue Is Back!
When Treaty United took on the mantle as senior football representatives for the Mid-West region in 2020, it paid homage to the colours of the region’s very first senior football club from back in 1937, red and white stripes.
Those red and white stripes were worn by the Limerick club from its first ever competitive game in August 1937 through to August 1943 when the club changed its colours to blue.
Apart from a brief spell in the 1980s, blue remained the club’s colour through a range of ownership models.
Indeed, all major trophies captured by any Limerick senior club since its inception were captured in the iconic blue colours. Given the close on 80-year association with the colour, it’s probably not surprising that blue is in the blood of most Limerick football supporters and part of the identity of senior football in the region.
So, when Ciara McCormack took over as co-owner and CEO of the club and started her engagement with football fans in the region, the question of club colours was high on their agenda with the overwhelming feedback that they wanted to see a return to blue.
The jersey design was done by Jay DeMerit who many people might remember from his time in the English Premier League with Watford and as a member of the United States men’s national team.
Jay’s brief with the design was to come up with a jersey that not only brought back the iconic blue but linked the club strongly with its community roots in Limerick and represented the club’s values of Community, Integrity and Excellence.
The jersey design incorporates an image of King John’s Castle, one of Limerick’s most famous landmarks, representing strength in the community.
Inside the collar is the Latin motto of the ancient city of Limerick Urbs antiqua fuit studisque asperrima belli linking us to our roots and capturing our fighting spirit.
And in recognition of both the original 1937 colours and Treaty United’s own initial colours, the sleeves have red and white bands alongside the iconic blue colour.
So, a new design for a new era but one which links us to our roots, our community and our fanbase.
The jersey was brought to life by our partners O’Neills and will be worn by the Senior Men’s and Senior Women’s Teams and by our 6 League of Ireland academy sides. It is available to pre-purchase at the link below.
This home jersey is part of a trio of new designs including our away and third choice kits, details of which will be provided in the coming weeks.
