Treaty United

Decent performances have not been matched by wins for injury-hit Treaty United in the last couple of months but supporters will be encouraged by how well the side played on the first of two trips to Cork in a week last Friday night.

Tommy Barrett’s side gave themselves yet another mountain to climb by conceding an early goal to Cobh Ramblers after 19 minutes.

However, growing into the game, Treaty began to take control in front of a subdued home crowd and were the better side in the first half.

The second half followed a similar theme and reward was to come on 52 minutes when well-worked midfield passing ended up with substitute Willie Armshaw on the ball. A superbly delivered cross was met by the head of Lee Devitt.

More chances came Treaty’s way with Stephen Christopher rattling the crossbar and Armshaw screwing a decent effort wide. A well-earned point but Treaty will feel slightly disappointed not to have taken all three.

A perplexing red card was shown to Oisin O’Reilly in injury time, yet another debatable refereeing decision which leaves the squad further depleted.

Cork City

Tim Clancy’s 2024 Cork City vintage is functional rather than spectacular but their fans will care little as they remain unbeaten in what is turning into a victory march back to the Premier Division.

Big off-season signing Jack Doherty has contributed five goals but City are not reliant on him alone to hit the back of the net with goals spread out between a number of players, including Cian Coleman, Barry Coffey, Sean Murray and Evan McLaughlin.

They are in excellent form following wins over Cobh and Bray Wanderers in recent weeks.

Past meetings

Treaty went unbeaten in their first season in senior football against their Munster rivals.

A 2-1 win for the Limerick club was followed by a 3-2 victory at Turners Cross in the 2021 season. A 0-0 draw closed out the season’s meetings at the Markets Field.

The following season, City exacted clinical revenge, blitzing Treaty with a 4-0 win at the Markets Field.

Another 3-0 defeat followed at Turners Cross.

The return fixture at the Markets Field was even worse with City running out 5-0 winners on an afternoon that Treaty fans would like to forget.

However, with City riding high at the top end of the table in the 2022 season, Treaty turned up at Turners Cross and left with a surprise 2-0 victory courtesy of goals from Ben O’Riordan, a thunderbolt, and a Marc Ludden penalty. A famous victory.

Treaty made City work hard for passage into the second round of the FAI cup last season, the Leeside club eventually running out 2-0 winners with goals from Cian Coleman and Tunde Olowabi.
