Walsh Named Captain

Treaty United can confirm that Mark Walsh has been named captain of the club’s Senior Men’s team ahead of the 2024 season.

The Tipperary native follows in the steps of Jack Lynch and Marc Ludden in having the honour of being named as official captain of the team.

Mark departed Nenagh Celtic for Treaty United in early 2021, becoming one of the 26 players to form Treaty United’s first ever squad at Senior Men’s level. He was in the starting line-up for the club’s first ever competitive Senior Men’s game in March of 2021 and has been an important player for the club ever since, owing to his versatility in the roles of defensive midfielder and centre-back. Mark’s 73 competitive appearances for the club to date makes him one of the club’s most loyal and experienced assets, and therefore a perfect candidate for the role of captain.

Speaking to TreatyUnitedFC.com, Treaty United Senior Men’s manager Tommy Barrett spoke about the decision to give the captain’s armband to Mark ahead of the new season:

“We didn’t have to think about it too much, he’s a leader who leads from the back. With Mark’s age profile, being a local lad and having that bit of experience we felt that he was the right person for the role. We have a few leaders in the pack now with the likes of Ben O’Riordan, Enda Curran, Lee Devitt, Yoyo Mahdy, who is a great talker on the pitch, Evan O’Connor, who will be an important leader when he returns from injury, and Oisin O’Reilly too. We have some great lads, but you know what you get from Mark, we know he’s a really good defender, he’s liked amongst the group and the players respect him.”

TreatyUnitedFC.com caught up with Mark who was delighted to have the honour of wearing the armband ahead of the new season:

“I’m privileged to be named as captain of Treaty United this season. Since 2020 I have been proud to be a Treaty player, to lead the side is a responsibility and a trust that I take very seriously. I can’t wait to lead the team out for our Munster Derby with Cobh at home to start the new season. Here’s to another memorable campaign in 2024.”
