Treaty United

The Limerick-based club is on a high after an entertaining 3-1 victory over bottom side Kerry at the Markets Field on Friday night which marked 100 competitive games for the men’s senior side.

This followed an impressive 1-0 away win to Finn Harps with a superb Dean George goal being backed up with a solid defensive performance to take away all three points from Ballybofey – a very difficult place to go for Limerick sides in recent years.

That win was preceded by three defeats – to league leaders Galway by three goals to nil, a heartbreaking 3-2 to Longford Town at home through a late winner for the visitors and a difficult trip to Wexford that ended in a 1-0 loss.

A win would certainly shake up the race for the play-offs and would put Treaty right back in the mix with eight games left of the season.

Waterford

Keith Long’s side sit comfortably in second and are certain to secure a play-off spot but results have been mixed in recent weeks.

A 2-2 draw with league leaders Galway was followed by a chastening 3-0 defeat by Cork City in the FAI Cup.

The Munster club returned to winning ways on Friday night, dispatching Bray Wanderers by a goal to nil, despite having goalscorer Cameron Cresswell sent off with just 33 minutes gone.

Past Meetings

In nine competitive meetings between the two sides, Waterford have very much held the upper hand with six wins to Treaty’s two – one of those victories for the Limerick-based side coming in the Munster Senior Cup.

Last season’s play-off semi-finals will live long in the memory. Waterford seemingly finished the tie at the Markets Field with a 4-1 victory, scoring twice late on after Colin Conroy was sent off in controversial circumstances.

However, the second leg saw Treaty take a 3-1 lead into half-time with two Marc Ludden penalties and a Lee Devitt strike fuelling hope of an unlikely turnaround.

A second half rally saw Waterford into the final where they dispatched Galway United 3-0. Promotion was not to be, though, with a defeat to UCD in the promotion/relegation decider consigning them to another season in the first division.

The last meeting between the sides is one to forget for Treaty supporters, a 7-0 defeat at the RSC.
