On a rare Wednesday night fixture because of Athlone Town’s impending Champions League matches next week, the league leading Midlanders and middle of the table Treaty, treated the Markets Field faithful to an exciting back and forth performance.
After a couple of great chances for Treaty’s Madelyn Robbins in the early going, Athlone Town stormed back and took the lead off of a Kayleigh Shine finish from a Shauna Brennan corner in the 7th minute.
After an exciting back and forth through the first half, on almost the stroke of half time, Katie Lawlee sent the crowd cheering with a cracking finish, taking a Madelyn Robbins cut back and smashing the ball into the top of the net.
The high energy affair continued into the second half with inspired play from both squads. Strong defensive play was evident led by both Athlone goalkeeper Megan Plaschko, and Mara McCleary who was outstanding in Treaty’s backline.
In the end there were a couple of scary moments for Treaty fans with a couple of late corner kicks that went close. But at the final whistle the home team earned a deserved point against a strong Athlone Town side who will next face Welsh champs Cardiff City to kick off their Champions League campaign next week.
