Treaty United are pleased to announce the signing of 18-year-old striker Brian Cunningham.

Cunningham joins from Galway United, where he featured at both academy and senior level for the Tribesmen. He comes from a family well-acquainted with the League of Ireland, with his brother Padraic making over 100 appearances for Galway United across two spells.

A native of Headford, Cunningham made the move to Galway United from Mervue United in 2021. He has represented Galway at MU17, MU19, and MU20 level in recent seasons and played a key role in the club’s run to the 2023 Enda McGuill Cup Final, narrowly losing out to Shamrock Rovers.

His strong academy performances earned him a senior debut in 2023, and he was included in Galway United’s senior squad for the 2025 Premier Division campaign, where he saw further involvement.

Cunningham also has international experience, having scored the winner for the Irish Schools U18 team against Australia in January 2023. He featured in both the 2023 and 2024 Centenary Shield campaigns, scoring in each. Most recently, in November 2024, he appeared in two friendlies against Belgium for Colin O’Brien’s Ireland MU18 side.

Speaking to TreatyUnitedFC.com, Tommy Barrett was optimistic about the signing of the young striker:

“Brian is only 18 and has been on the bench for Galway a number of times this year, and in fairness, John Caulfield will only put lads on the bench if he thinks they’re good enough. He is definitely one for the future and he’s hoping to go to college in Limerick in September so we hope to have him long-term. He’s got lots of power, works hard and has an eye for goal. We think that he can impact our season, and he’s got good pedigree with his brother Padraic having been a stalwart for Galway United.”

We caught up with Brian after signing with the club and he spoke with excitement about his move:

“I’m delighted to have the opportunity to sign for Treaty United. I can’t wait to get going at the Markets Field and am looking forward to working hard for the team to help us to progress.”

Cunningham becomes the latest addition to Tommy Barrett’s side in the July transfer window, and is available for selection for Friday night’s game against Cobh Ramblers at the Markets Field.
