Treaty United are pleased to announce the signing of Gillian Keenan.
Gillian returns for her second spell at Treaty United having previously lined out in the club’s first two seasons in the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division.
Since then, the Laois native has gone on to enjoy a successful stint with Athlone Town, making over 60 appearances and playing a key role in the club’s rise. During her time there, she helped Athlone to a Women’s Premier Division title, an FAI Cup and a President’s Cup before departing to study abroad
Gillian started her senior football career with shorts spells at Kilkenny United and Peamount United.
She joined Treaty United in 2020 ahead of the club’s first season in the Women’s Premier Division, and was in the starting eleven that August against Peamount United for the club’s first ever competitive game. During her two seasons with the club, she made 32 appearances on the wing, contributing eight goals and three assists. While with the club Gillian provided some memorable moments for supporters. In 2020 she scored the opener in a 2-0 win over DLR Waves to book the club’s spot in an FAI Cup semi-final for the first time. Her most memorable moment with the club came in May of 2021 as she went on a magnificent solo run to score what proved to be the pivotal goal in a 3-2 win away to Cork City.
The 24-year-old becomes the latest addition to Sean Russell’s squad and adds a great deal of experience having found the net more than 20 times in over 100 appearances in the league.
Gillian spoke to TreatyUnitedFC.com and was excited to get going with the club:
“I’m delighted to have signed with Treaty for the remainder of the season. It’s good to be back playing in the League of Ireland and hopefully I can come in and play my part in helping Treaty to win their remaining games. Everyone has been so welcoming and I’m excited to get going!”
Manager Sean Russell was happy to reunite with a player of Gillian’s quality:
“We’re delighted to have Gillian in; she’s someone I would have worked with when I was assistant coach with the club in the past. I’m well aware of her journey and the qualities she possesses, she’s a very welcome addition with the experience she brings from being involved in a successful Athlone Town team. She brings experience of winning trophies to our group and I think that’s a good step forward for the squad. Also, she’s still so young and we feel we’re getting her in at the right time in her football career. I think the biggest attributes she provides is her personality and ability and it matches that of the squad. She’ll settle into the group easily and has done so thus far. We’re very happy to have her and we’re excited to see what she brings to the group.”
